Choosing pictures for the contents page

I left this part of the magazine until last so that I could establish what I would be writing on the contents page. I also wanted to put the front cover of the magazine on the contents page with arrows pointing to features with page numbers as a quirky and easy way to find the best things! I designed my contents page on paper. I then took some pictures for the contents page. This was a picture of my uncle in his personal recording studio. Although he is much older than my aimed age group, I planned to make him come across as a big producer who made a lot of good artists famous. That picture would have a short description over it and a page number. In the bottom right corner, the publisher of my magazine will be. The contents subtitles will be 'Features', 'Events' and 'News'. In the bottom left corner, I plan to put a picture of a really old microphone I took a picture of in my uncles recording studio.

Here is the first picture I took of my uncle:

I thought the lighting was perfect and did not feel I needed to edit this picture in particular. This shot establishes his surroundings, his job and his character and that is why I chose it. The costume is modern and casual and his hair is spiked to fit in with modern fashion. His pose and facial expressions are confident which makes everything believable. I thought this could feature on my front page but I wanted it to be a little more artistic. There was also the problem of the TV being in the background which, 1) did not fit in with the setting and 2) had reflections showing people behind me watching the pictures be taken. In another photo with the TV, the reflections would have been inconsistent and that was a problem for me. As a solution, I put a picture of 'The Who' infront of it to set the scene a little more and to cover up the reflection.

Here is the second picture taken:

This was a good one as there was not any inconsistency with this one compared to any ones taken afterwards. It showed him in full profile looking happy and promoting a happy career. His costume is in view and the props he is using fit in perfectly and are in a good view. I decided this was a good picture to use.

Here is the third picture I took of my uncle:

This was ideal for my style because it looks casual, the lighting is happy, the props are in good view, there is no inconsistency and you can see my uncle and his costume well. The microphone in the foreground gives the photo an artistic and interesting edge also. I made the decision to use this as the bigger picture of my uncle on the contents page. The second picture of him above would be the smaller one on the corner overlapping this one in a frame.

Here are some other photos of my uncle I considered but rejected for the reasons given next to them:

His back is the only thing visible, doesn't explain who he is, what he is doing there or the purpose of the picture.
Still a lot of his back showing and not enough props in view. You can also see a loft window above him which does not fit in with the scene.
Would have been good had there not been reflections in the TV.
Good photo but not enough of my uncle shown. It does not give enough explanation for a contents page photograph.
